The U.S. Embassy has received reports of a planned demonstration in Accra on Monday, September 18, 2017, from 07:30 am to 12:00 noon. The demonstration, expected to consist of several hundred people, will reportedly begin at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and end at the Arts Center, but could impact other nearby areas including Cantonments. The U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to avoid this route until normal traffic patterns are restored. U.S. Embassy personnel have been instructed to avoid this area.
Demonstrations, even peaceful ones, can escalate quickly and even turn violent, so the Embassy urges all U.S. citizens to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and avoid this area as much as possible. Should you find yourself among or near protesters, depart the area immediately. Review your personal security plans, and monitor local news stations for updates.
